Riccardo Buck was born and raised in Treviso, Italy.
He studied painting at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera, Milan, under the supervision of Gaetano Grillo.
Simultaneously, he studied music composition in Treviso with Maestro Filippo Perocco.
For his thesis he investigated the correspondences between music and painting in the 20th century, experimenting with the possibility of a translation between the two.
In 2012, he moved to Berlin and received a master’s degree in Visual and Media Anthropology from the Freie Universität.
His artwork experiments with a wide range of different styles and mediums. His pencil drawings, which are often based on photographs, demonstrate a methodical approach for naturalism and realism, while his paintings have a more abstract and sensorial trajectory. One could argue that the common thread in the paintings is a view on the world in the 3rd person, the main subject being human figures and intimacy. Mostly melancholic and suspended in time his paintings also carry a strong lust for life which is to be found in the richness of detail, the materiality of his medium, the bright color palette and the dynamism of his subjects. It plays between disappointment and hope, hiding and giving and aims at triggering the viewer’s curiosity.
In 2009, Buck participated in the Risarte painting prize, where he met Gerry Scotti, who purchased several of his artworks. In the following years, his art has been shown at Spazio Sassetti (Milan), Accademia contemporanea (Milan), Keller Klub (Berlin), Athena standards residency (Athens) and While Supplies Last (Seattle).
In addition to art, Buck has been involved with music and sound since his early teens. His electro-acoustic pieces have been performed in Italy, Japan, Germany, Poland and Bolivia. He has also composed music for feature films from the silent Era in collaboration with the Cineforum Labirinto. These scores have been performed live at different film and music festivals around Italy, including the Larsenale festival in Treviso and the Riccione TTV festival in Riccione.
Buck currently lives and works in Berlin.
